Will DC be able to once again top the charts in the movie industry in 2016? Unlike its counterpart in the comic book industry, DC has been on a roller coaster ride when it comes to its big budget films. Whether it was due to fans high expectations or poor storylines, movies based on DC heroes have not hit it big with the general public.
Batman versus Superman: Dawn of Justice is the follow-up to the June 2013 Man of Steel movie. (The movie “Man of Steel” is a reiteration of Superman’s origins starred actor Henry Cavill-as Superman) And although the new superman movie grossed over $668 million worldwide and was hailed as a financial success, critics and movie viewers gave it mixed reviews. Can we expect this to be the upcoming trend of things to come? So what is the movie all about? Well it’s no secret that DC is attempting to reboot their franchise and start a new fan base for their extended universe….as the title implies Batman (The Dark Knight) will face-off in a confrontation with Superman (The Man of Steel). Bruce Wayne (Batman), living in a world questioning the role of super powered beings, fears the power at Superman’s disposal. Believing someone had to do something, Batman clashes with Superman. Batman’s statement from the released trailer “Can you bleed? You will….” promises an epic battle between DC’s two most famous superheroes.
From what we can gather, the movie also features Lex Luthor (businessman, supervillain). Who has a plan of his own and creates Doomsday – a super-powered being destroying metropolis. (Note: Doomsday is supervillain in the DC universe that killed Superman) Superman and Batman put aside their conflict and team-up with Wonder woman to save the day. This film is directed by Zack Snyder (Man of Steel Director) starring Henry Cavill (returning to his role as Superman/Clark Kent), Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
It is important to note that Batman versus Superman movie release was changed. In January 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures issued a statement announcing the release date of the Superman vs. Batman movie had been moved from July 17, 2015 to May 6, 2016. Here is the official press release:
BURBANK, CA – January 17, 2014 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film has been moved to May 6, 2016, allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story. The decision was made following the shift of the start of production to second quarter of this year. The Studio has also set a July 17, 2015, worldwide release date for its as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure. Joe Wright will direct the epic live-action film about the boy who would nevewouldr grow up, created by J.M. Barrie. The dual date announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
In simple terms, the start of production was delayed and the moving of the release date was to give the filmmakers time to complete the film. What does this mean for upcoming viewers? I guess we will have to watch the movie to find out. **Special Update: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice now to be released March 25, 2016.
